NZ teams advance to Sydney Sevens quarter-finals
The New Zealand men were beaten 17-14, going down to a late Blitzboks penalty shot at goal after both sides had scored two tries.
Earlier on Saturday, they thumped Kenya 33-0 to follow an opening 45-7 defeat of Uruguay, giving them enough leeway to guarantee a place in the knockout phase.
Their quarter-final on Saturday night was to be against Samoa, whose unbeaten pool campaign was rounded out with a 35-15 thumping of Spain.
The unbeaten New Zealand women beat Japan 27-10 in their only pool match on Saturday and were to play the same opponents in their quarter-final several hours later.
The Black Ferns Sevens are out to make it three tournament wins in a row and have looked impressive this week, having clocked pool wins over Papua New Guinea (48-0) and France (29-14) on Friday.
