Auckland Airport, businesses and homes have been flooded, cars submerged and Sir Elton John's concert was abandoned - it's been a dramatic day across Auckland.

Almost 240 millimetres of rain had fallen in the Auckland region by 9.30pm as West Aucklanders were being evacuated from their homes due to flooding.

The international terminal at Auckland International Airport has been closed tonight due to flooding and people are being asked not to go there in the meantime.

Every fire truck in the city is responding to the weather event, with more than 1000 calls for help by mid-evening.

Here are some photos of what some are calling the worst flooding to ever affect the city.
