A New Zealander has been stabbed in Vancouver in what police described as an "unprovoked" attack on Thursday night (NZ time).

In a news release published on Friday morning (NZ time), Vancouver Police said they were investigating the incident which happened in the Granville Entertainment District just before 8pm on 12 July (Vancouver time).

The 28-year-old was visiting the western Canadian city from New Zealand.

His injuries were non-life-threatening and he took himself to hospital, local police said.

"From what we know so far, this attack appears to be completely random and unprovoked," Constable Tania Visintin said.

She said investigators were looking for a man in relation to the incident.

No arrests had been made so far.
